YES, it is for the shop! I like to have nice things in my shop.
Specs:
- Seat is a Maple Burl slab approx. 18″ wide, 16″ front to back, 2″ thick. Purchased in California approx. 30 yrs ago.
- Legs are walnut, started out 1 1/4″ square.
- Stretchers are Birdseye maple, 1 1/4″ square.
- Height of seat is 28 1/2″ angled up to about 29 1/4 at the back.
- Finish is Danish oil.
- Joinery is round mortise and tenon, see build link for how the joints were cut.
My greatest challenge during the build was cutting the round tenons. I had never used the antique Stearns hollow auger before, but it turned out to be a great tool and a lot of fun! I only practiced on one scrap piece of walnut before getting to work on the stool legs, and then the stretcher pieces. The walnut certainly cut a lot easier than the b.e maple did. The tool actually shaves away end grain, so it takes a bit of muscle to keep it going, but it was fun!
For the next “build off” competition, I would like to see a Tool Stand build. I need to build a stand for my lathe. Maybe some other people may want to build a stand for their jointer, power planer, lathe, sander, or other power tool that needs a good place to sit. I think that would be fun!
