I’m on TV!

Tri-Cities Community Television covered the Celebration of Wood show last month and I appeared on screen briefly around the 4:43 mark. The video segment is on YouTube and can also be seen on ShawTV, channel 4 in Vancouver.  (Duration - 7:09) Yes, I'm still waiting anxiously to get the footage from my PechaKucha presentation.

What Inspires?

Steve Ramsey of Woodworking for Mere Mortals started a new segment on his blog called Inspiration Project, asking creative people the simple question, "what inspires?".  He asked me to kick off Inspiration Project, so I created a video (duration: 5:34) Read Steve's post and watch my video HERE.

Round Three of #Woodchat’s Telephone Game Design Experiment

Round 1 Three weeks ago, I shared a drawing of this table which I'd designed.  It was part of what we've called the #Woodchat Telephone Game Design Experiment. I presented the design at #Woodchat in this video and handed the design over to my co-host Matt Gradwohl who was eager to redraw the table his way.  (Discussion of the table … Continue reading Round Three of #Woodchat’s Telephone Game Design Experiment

Cutting Joinery for V-Table

You might remember this table design I developed in January.  Last weekend, while at the Skills Canada National Competition, I showed it to some of the cabinetmakers overseeing the event and they were very impressed with the design. I counted twelve intersections in the centre and one really big headache. I figured that I could … Continue reading Cutting Joinery for V-Table

Table in a Tree

Last weekend, I met with some of my fellow Artwalk participants and showed them the yellow cedar chair that I'd built to hang in the tree outside The Bistro Gallery where I will be showing my work. They loved the concept and encouraged me to make another piece for a second tree.  So, that's what … Continue reading Table in a Tree

Magic Square Changed How I Work

Tolerances and precision in woodworking have been two ideas that I've been contemplating for a long time (see A Box Called "Tolerences" and A Box Called "Necessessity").  That was why Magic Square captured my attention. This video outlines the benefits of Magic Square (duration - 4:24). This is the seventeenth slide from my PechaKucha presentation.

Chair in a Tree

Saturday was a full day in the shop.  After breakfast, I went down to the shop and built 90% of a chair which will be installed up in a tree.  (In case you missed it, here's the back story.) I documented my progress live on Twitter using hashtag #FlairWW (follow me @FlairWoodworks) which was useful because each update … Continue reading Chair in a Tree

New Grips for My Veritas #5-1/4 Bench Plane

Of all the bench planes (bevel-down) I have acquired, the Veritas ones have been by far the easiest to adjust and for that, I love them.  Blade adjustments have always been responsive and predictable; I could set the mouth to let through only a sliver of light quicker than you can read the upcoming quote, … Continue reading New Grips for My Veritas #5-1/4 Bench Plane
